Can't delete user profile of deleted domain account. Documents and settings. But it shows as 'Account Unknown' under user profile settings See below image Now we need to delete similar user profiles ( I know that we could simply delete the parent folder that belongs to such user) but I need to do that systematically to remove all. Delete “Account Unknown” Local User Profiles Issue: On Windows XP or Server 2003, under Control Panel / System / Advanced / User Profiles / Settings, there are some “Account Unknown” user profile, but the Delete button is grayed out.
I've recently noticed a user account on my machine that I did not create. I'm wondering if this is Malware of some kind, and if anyone has an idea of how to get rid of it. I don't know if it is related to Windows 10 or not, but that's what I'm using. Recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 Pro. I've tried deleting the account under Computer Management --> Local Users and Groups, but it just keeps coming back. I've tried disabling the account and it re-enables itself. It's not an Admin, and I haven't noticed anything, but that doesn't mean it isn't doing something. Luckily, it's on my laptop, which I don't use all that often. I've tried Malwarebytes Chameleon, which didn't find anything. I've tried Malewarebytes Anti-Rootkit, and that didn't find anything. And I've tried ESET Online Scanner, which didn't find anything. I'm running out of ideas. I guess I could just format and start over, but I don't really want to do that.
The name of the account is gmapskfmnrg, if that helps anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Delete Profiles Windows 7
It's not uncommon to see entries in Windows ACLs (NTFS files/folders, registry, AD objects, etc.) with the name 'Account Unknown (SID)'. Obviously these are because of old AD users or groups which at some point had permissions manually configured on the relevant object and have since been deleted.

- Resurrecting “Account Unknown” Profiles from the Dead! By Chris Blackburn The main reason that a users profile, in most cases a domain profile, would appear in User Profile manager with the title of “Account Unknown” is because it’s SID (security ID) is invalid, or that the computer has otherwise joined a different domain.
Does anyone know if it is safe to remove these 'Account Unknown' ACEs?
My gut feeling is that it should be just fine, but I'm wondering if anyone has any past experiences where doing this has caused trouble?
Normally I just ignore these, but the company I'm working at now seems to have an abnormal number of these, most likely due to past admins' inexperience with AD/Windows and assigning permissions to user accounts rather than groups in all sorts of weird places.

FWIW, our environment is not complex, a single domain forest, 4 DCs in 3 sites, with all network connectivity and replication healthy, so I'm certain that these 'Account Unknown' entries are really old accounts, and not just because of some failure to resolve the SID to a human-readable name.

As long as you have no connectivity problems, yes, it's safe to delete them. Do be careful because Windows will show 'Account Unknown' if it can't connect to AD, or if you have multiple domains it might take a few moments to cross the domain boundaries, etc.

take a backup and go ahead.
Assuming you don't have any trusts with other domains, and as earlier pointed out, any network connectivity issues.

you can take backup of ACLs using xcacls.exe or icacls.exe (Vista and above)They can be in format such a way that, you can copy paste and reapply them back.
